PQ–Practical Questions

  • I’d welcome both English and German(*) answers to such PQ–Practical Questions of mine. Thanks.

PQ-1) Down-loaded MediathekView, I’ve got a “MediathekView-13.2.1” directory with inside a dozen of items, among which such three “.exe” files: MediathekView, MediathekView_ipv4, MediathekView_Portable. Fine.
Now, what should I do first? Thanks.

@studio-pm MediathekView.exe is the start file.

  • As far as I recall, under “normal” circumstances any of the three should work. I am routinely running the “default,” MediathekView.exe.

The other two were created to handle special situations where problems exist. For instance, when your network doesn’t voluntarily want to connect via IP version 4 you can force the issue by running MediathekView_ipv4.exe and thus steer it away from IP version 6, which may not connect correctly - and at this point I have given you about twice as much information as I know about the practical use of IPV6 …

As for the “portable” version - I extrapolate from the use of this term with other software - is a version you could install on a USB stick and run from there on any supported Windows computer. No local files or registry entries need to be installed, so the version is in that sense portable between systems. This should also work on Windows systems that were booted from a CD or DVD. (It just occurred to me that I am assuming Windows as a platform here, but MediathekView is written in Java and as such may well run on a whole lot of Linux systems as well - I may find myself there some day if and when the evolution of Windows takes me to places I don’t want to go, but that is a completely different discussion.)

And now for the student of the german language and all others that don’t as a rule come here to study English:

  • PQ–Practical Questions, next:
Encouraged by this first and effective answer, here I happily am at the subsequent “Practical Question”, necessarily to be justified by the description of my intended goal. That is, what I’m eager to do, so to help you helping me. Goal:
Download such “mp4” items as Das Erste tagesschau [as available on : https://www.ardmediathek.de/tv/nachrichten ], along with the related “UT” (UnterTitel), when available; then work on them off-line, word-by-word, so to become fully familiar with that language, and learn understanding actual TV news.

Such “mp4” files are already down-loadable as such, but, alas, without the precious subtitles that I need to have cozy off-line too, so to transcribe and learn them until, hopefully, they become superfluous to me.

Now, that said, what next? I mean, what should I do?

I’ve already stated “EU” at the “Ester Start” of MediathekView.exe, but then no further idea what to do next…

<!> For what I’ve seen MediathekView sounds tremendously powerful so that to be effective with my goal I’ve got to ignore / skip all features but the few ones bringing me where I intend o go.
That said again to help you helping me. Thanks!

    • P.M.

I’m taking good note of this specific experience of mine, so to possibly write down a technical note possibly useful to other users with similar requirements…

  • Not every “Tagesschau” comes with subtitles. If you take a look at the following picture, you’ll see that only a few of the available files are carrying subtitles (in german: Untertitel = UT).

    0_1538332462106_Selection.png

If you download one of the files that holds subtitles, you need to check the box in front of Untertitel speichern: “Filmname.xxx.
As a result you will get two more files as to be seen in the next picture.

    0_1538332817232_Files.png

    Good luck!

  • Misunderstanding:
    M1) I see well on the original ARD Mediathek site which are the tagesschau UT-marked;
M2) What I do not know is how to reach them via MediathekView so to download any desired UT-marked item together with its UT-UnterTitle.
<!> Just a step-by-step istructions to that purpose and I’ll be extremely grateful to you! Yours,

    • P.M.

  • Okay, looks like we need to start from scratch.
As far as I can see, the original ARD Mediathek allows for watching Tagesschau with subtitles, but lets you download only a file without them.

To get the film plus subtitles you will have to install MediathekView and than proceed as explained in my previous posting.

    Hope this helps.

  • Evidently I’ve not been able to explain clearly enough myself and my difficulties, so that the linguistic barrier is still discouraging there, unbreakable, insuperable; and so to give rise to a wonderful example of desperately void & useless dialog.

May I kindly suggest whoever else will be so kind to offer his support, to read this “Practical Questions” request from the beginning, so to avoid any further nasty misunderstandings?
    Thank you. Yours,

    • P.M.

Well I doubt that there are any misunderstandings on this side of the equation. People have explained (even with screenshots) how you can download the video (.mp4) and the subtitles (a tick at “Untertitel speichern”). Surely with this method (considering that you might not had the tick set before) you would have to download the video once more so that the subtitle is automatically downloaded.
If you don’t want to download the video again I suggest to use https://mediathekviewweb.de/ where you manually can download the subtitle file (UT) for the respective files.

  • –> explained (even with screenshots)
Unfortunately totally incomprehensible to me, as I’ve no idea how to reach that point. So that now I’ll try to ask the same question anew elsewhere, before giving it up, in despair.
    Anyhow, thank you.

I was not aware that you had not startet mediathekview yet (or have you?)
There is not much use in asking questions over again without giving halfway exact information about what you did, what did not work and what errormessages (if any) you did get.

I’ll try again from scratch and this time in detail.
You start mediathekview.exe and should after some time find yourself in front of what you see in my first screenshot except for the download dialog in the middle of the window.
To make shure you see the latest entries you may click the leftmost icon under the Filme Tab. This loads the latest list from the server.
To see only the entries for Tagesschau you enter tagesschau into the dialogbox that sits to the right above the UT Label (invisible in my screenshot).
You than see a list like the one on my screenshot. Sort the entries by clicking on either of the Labels Sender, Thema, Titel, Datum etc. to sort by that column.
Datum is most useful as it sorts your list by date. Clicking again reverses sortorder.
Now you pick the file you wish to download (preferebly with a check in the UT column because this indicates that there are subtitles for this entry), rightclick anywhere in that line and in the menu that pops up choose Film aufzeichnen which means “record film” but does infact bring up the download dialog.
Here you edit whatever Zielpfad (destination path) you would like the files to be downloaded to or alternatively click on the folder-icon right of the path and choose the folder you like.
To get the subtitles you need to check the box in front of Untertitel speichern: “Filmname.xxx” and below that you may choose which resolution you prefer from HD to low.
If you want your download to start immediately you check the Box in front of Download sofort starten click on OK and off you go.
If you now click the Downloads Tab in the mediathekview main window you can watch the progress of your download.

Anymore Questions? Feel free to ask but please supply some information about what worked and what didn’t.

  • Facts first:
F1) Successfully downloaded two desired items, one without and one with subtitles.
F2) Now, ice broken, MediathekView user interface is becoming understandable enough
F3) “SRT” and “TTML” subtitle files gotten – now I’ll try to synchronize them with my Windows Media Player, hoping it will be not that difficult…

    Then Comments:
No comment for now, but I assume it will be rather useful to spend a word or two about this happy experience…
    Yours,

    • P.M.

  • Now I succeeded also in synchronizing the original downloaded “.mp4” file with the related “.srt” subtitle file, so to enjoy them on Windows Media Player, off-line.
Next days, as promised, I intend to let you know some comments about this whole experience.
    Yours,

    • P.M.

  • @studio-pm I’m glad to see things are working now for you.
Would you mind if your “Step-by-step help” posting from monday would be removed from the forum?
Reason: if one is searching google for “mediathekview step by step” one will find this posting first in the results and this will not be of any help to her/him.

  • => Would you mind if your “Step-by-step help” posting … removed
Of course not, and I agree.

    • P.M.

  • Here you have the promised Conclusive Comments to this MediathekView experience of mine.

CC1) A residual difficulty is that at every new run I have got to wait for a surprisingly long and lengthy start up process, including a scanning of some 250 000 “Insgesamt” count, that I’d be happy to skip as I well know in advance what I’m looking for in the target “ARD Mediathek – Tagesschau 1 Das Erste” storage. But I do not intend here to ask “if and how” to possibly overcome such difficulty; for the reasons hereafter explained in some detail.

CC2) Not being a native German language speaker, so to reach an initial modest level of practical knowledge of use, I had to pay a too discouragingly high human price; an experience I do not intend to repeat. Indeed at conclusion of this experience I intend to withdraw from this very forum, for the hereafter exposed reasons. Reasons that, perhaps, you may consider for the future development of this otherwise very interesting tool.

CC3) In itself your attitude, as depicted in the next paragraph, is neither right nor wrong, it depends upon you strategy, your vision:
    – If you see MediathekView as a purely “deutsch” tool, not aimed at anybody else but native German speakers, your current attitude is perfectly valid & coherent;
    – If not, not.

CC4) The MediathekView revealed to be an environment too hostile to non-native German Language speakers, as I am. Ideed, to break the initial wall of incomprehension, I ventured to deal with a unbearably hostile, scornful, arrogant, presumptuous human environment. An experience I do not intend to repeat, of course.-
    So, so long.

    • P.M.

  • Bei so viel überbordender Dankbarkeit macht es wirklich Spaß zu helfen 😉

    WTF are you complaining about?

MediathekView deals with German languag public TV station. So it is understandable and reasonable that everything is in German - the program itself as well as the documentation.

Most functions are also quite obvious - filters, etc. - and if you do not understand a specific word or a specific expression / sentence, there are online translators which are sometimes (not always) useful. And if these tools do not help, there is the forum to ask.

MediathekView is in no way “hostile to non-native German speakers” - at least not more than any English language program is to all non-native English speakers. And it appears that some English speakers (you obviously not included, since you try to learn German) tend to believe that their language is the only one anyone should use.
